The New ApplePro Site - Inspiration for Creatives

I just received an email update from Apple announcing their new ApplePro Site.

Ideas are in motion. And new technology is allowing photographers, musicians, designers, filmmakers, and artistic pros everywhere to blur the lines of traditional disciplines. Visit the new Apple Pro site and experience the projects and people that are redefining creativity.

There is quite a bit to check out on the site, but I particularly like the Insights and Ideas: Color section. But don't stop there, the site contains all kinds of tips and articles for designers, photographers, and musicians.

Get A Widget - Tools for Art Lovers and Designers

Lisaswidgets_sc_1I went over to Apple.com to drool checkout the new MacPro 17" notebook. It sure is pretty. While there I thought I'd look into some new widgets. I can't image how I was able to survive without these handy little apps. Here are a few to save you some time or dress up your Mac screen.

1. This first one I read about over at Musematic. Richard Urban writes about the Rijkswidget from the Rijksmuseum. Download it from Apple. Btw... Richard, love the Mystery Science Theater 2000 guys on your screen!

“The Rijkswidget only does one thing, but that one thing is absolutely splendid: it allows you to view a different work from the collection every day. And the ‘reverse side’ of every work provides more information about the work and the painter.”

2. Art Directors Toolkit Widget: Very useful and also available at Apple.

"Designed for creative professionals (graphic and web designers), this stand-alone application is packed with features. Search through thousands of color swatches in industry-standard libraries, view characters and keyboard equivalents of fonts, sample colors on-screen, convert fractions/decimals/units of measure, calculate file sizes, and much more."

3. Blogger Widget: For those of you using Blogger. Get this handy little widget so you can post right from your MAC dashboard. Available at Google.

The Day - Kathleen Edgecomb Writes on Kathy Heustis Art

Kathleen Edgecomb, writer for The Day, has written an article entitled A Snapshot Of Nature: Photographer Kathy Huestis Uses Technology to Make Art about the stunning artwork of Kathy Huestis. The article appears both on The Day's website and in today's print edition. You can read my past post of Kathy's work here at ArtLOOK as well. Kathleen's article expounds on Kathy's technique for creating these wonderful images and follows through on Kathy's background and inspiration....you can even read a quote or two in Kathleen's article by yours truly.

Heustisprimrose053006jpgMs. Edgecomb informs me that the above website link to the article is available for 7 days. I'm not sure if The Day provides online archives of feature stories but I'll check and follow up with you all later to let you know how long the link is accessible. You can also access an online gallery of Kathy's work and her studio at The Day Link as well.

Dare to be Different

Here's a quote I heard.  I have no idea who said it, or where it comes from. Here it is:

"You laugh at me because I'm different. I laugh at you because you're all the same"

New ArtLOOK Banner

My new ArtLOOK banner above was created for me by Jari Loisa at Playmellow. My son took the photo of me on Friday during a particularly foggy evening at our beach. Jari got inspired and made it into a lovely banner. Thanks Jari! And thanks to David for taking the photo!

Art and Design-Reading Books

The rest of today and tonight is dedicated to reading. I have quite a pile system going on here of stacked volumes I'd like to get through. One of the books in question for tonight and this weekend is Revealing Art by Matthew Kieran. I've been reading quite a bit in the blogs these last few days about the nature of art, galleries and how they respond to visitors, what is art, talking and teaching to collectors, art blogging and so on...  There is so much relevant information and so many conversations going on these days that I have too much to think about...and write about.  So I thought I'd take some time this weekend to read and think.

Anyway...The back cover of Mr. Kieran's book reads in part as follows:

"Why does art matter to us, and what makes good art?  Why is the role of imagination so important in art?...Revealing Art explores some of the most important questions we can ask about art.  Matthew Kieran clearly but forcefully asks how art inspires us and disgusts us, whether artistic judgment is simply a matter of taste, and if art can be immoral or obscene, should it be censored?"

"He also suggests some answers to problems that anyone in an art gallery or museum is likely to ask themselves: what is a beautiful work of art, and can art really reveal something true about our own nature?"

Have any of you read this book?  If so what is your thought on it?  If you haven't read the book I believe that the above summary might open up some thoughtful discussion.

Habits of Highly Effective Bloggers - Group Writing Project

Darren Rowse, over at Problogger, has once again posted a great read entitled Ten Habits of Effective ProBloggers.  It serves as a source of inspiration and advice, and is Darren's submission for his Habits of Highly Effective Bloggers - Group Writing Project

While I'm relatively new in the blogosphere (I certainly don't have Darren's 4 years of blogging experience) I thought I'd add my two cents to Darren's invitation to participate in the Group Writing Project. You can read Darren's list for yourself, but for the purposes of this blog, I'm going to tweak this post to reflect those ideas and thoughts that I feel will help designers and artists in their own quest to become successful in the blogosphere AND to illustrate the type of quality content that can be found in this medium.

So here is my list of what, for me, makes for effective blogging.  I'm not sure I could call these things "habits", but for sure, the most effective blogs I've seen all seem to have similar qualities.

1.  Write quality content. You've probably heard this before but I'm saying it again because content is king in the Blogosphere. Offer something of use and worth to your readers. Be unique. It is my opinion that there is a real void in arts blogging. Yes, there are some great art/design blogs and you will find some of them listed in my sidebar, but we, as artists and designers who blog, are at the forefront of this new media. There is room for so many more minds. Be a leader and shine a light on this passion we call art.

2.  Never lose your own voice. Don't try to write as you think others want you to write. Say what you feel and think in your own way.  Have fun with it, rant, explore and ponder. Join the discussion. I'd like to point you to an excellent discussion that was going on last week over at Arts Journalism blog: Critical Edge.  And another at Edward Winkleman regarding Art about Art and Elitism.  The voices in these two blogs, and in the comments sections within, are simply sparkling examples of the type of discussions out there and the brilliance that can be seen in the blogosphere.

3.  Read other blogs.  You can't create your blog and hope others will come visit you if you don't go out and visit them. Don't do this just for the sake of creating traffic to your own blog, but my goodness...go forth and read.  It's good for you and some of these guys will blow your mind with new ideas and insights.  Again, leave a comment and take part in the discussion.  This is about community for heavens sake and I believe those authors who are well read and informed make better bloggers.   So, sign up with Bloglines and start adding those favorite feeds to your account.

4.  Keep a note pad handy.  Ok...this is a habit. I read a lot and often as I do so, I'm struck by some inspiration or idea that I want to share here on my blog. One idea generates another idea and so on. I know I'll forget all this stuff unless I write down a few notes.  This serves to remind me of topics and commitments for this blog but also serves as a great resource when I feel the pinch of writers block.

5. To blog or not to blog.  I'm not sure that all artists and designers want to become bloggers.  It's really a personal decision whether or not to start a blog.  But I know that once you make the commitment to start a blog, it takes hard work (often many hours that your readers will never know about), commitment and dedication. Just like when you made the decision to become an artist or to start your own business, blogging will succeed for you if only you don't give up.

6. Don't just post images of artwork.  Use the artwork to illuminate what you have to say and vis versa. Add content to the post. Write your thoughts about what inspired you to create the artwork, how you feel about it and where you think it might take you next. People who love art also love the 'behind the scenes" stuff and getting to KNOW the artist will help your blog and your work become successful.

7. Write at night? Yup...this is another habit of mine. I seem to write best at night. It's that time of day when my mind is most quiet and I can sit back and reflect on what I want to say. It just works best for me, but of course, you will have to have your own special time.

Übernet.biz Solution Resolution

I'm happy to say that the Übernet situation posted here on May 11 has been rectified. I never heard from Übernet.biz regarding the matter but after having written 2 or 3 emails to the domain name owner we were able to settle things.  It seems the owner, a guy I genuinely like, thought I had done the work-for-hire!  Oh no no ArtLOOK readers...you know how I feel about that right?  After explaining my feelings about work-for-hire, what is required for a work-for-hire situation and why its a bad thing, he agreed that I should have credit for the site I designed saying he wanted me to feel good about the work because "I had done such a nice job".

While Übernet didn't restore my credit line, the client did allow me to go onto the index page to restore the credit line myself.  I also left a "maintained by" credit for Übernet seeing as it is the proper thing to do.

Nice Things People Say

  • Art On Groton Bank
"I am very impressed with the work Lisa has done for us in this short time. She has a light touch, very appealing and attractive, plus real style." Audrey Heard
  • David Black regarding an INK feature arts article:
"I was just handed the most incredible magazine article that I think has ever been written about me. It is just fantastic and people are presenting me with copies of the magazine. Really beautifully written, really beautifully written and no one has ever put all the pieces together as nicely as you have. Thank you so much."
  • Re: Article on Slater Museum
"Ok, Don't stand in a doorway when you read this as you may become hopelessly lodged... Hang on to your head, an ego boost attached... I love it Lisa. Spot on nicely done, access-able, significant and of a standard. I'm stoked, can't thank you enough, very happy and impressed." Jeff Lilly - INK Publishing
  • Designers Who Blog Says:
"The Art and Design is written in a easy manner, centred on the design community, and points to discussions I can use...It’s my kind of blog as it keeps on giving."

Cat Morely, "I enjoy your writing and will be checking back with ArtLOOK to keep up what you come up with next. I so envy those who can write well."
  • The Art Guide
"I am glad you are a perfectionist- You have given us a world-class site that will be an asset to The Guide as we move forward and expand." Matt Holmes, The Art Guide
  • Artist Julia Rogoff
"I found Lisa Mikulski to be just the right resource at the right time: focused, professional, with a great eye for color and design, and with very fast turnaround time for getting images up on the web -- an artist's best friend and there when you need her! She's got a really good command of the two worlds we as artists now inhabit: the technical issues of cyberspace in today's market, combined with bottom line issues of artistic judgement. I highly recommend her as a great resource for web design, artistic and gallery management."
