Charlestown Gallery New Website

Talented in their own right as artists, designers and photographers, their Rhode Island gallery reflects their fine eye for art that embraces abstract work, landscape, seascape and photography. A New Domain Name for The Art Guide

There are now two ways to access the official site for The Art Guide. Matt Holmes and the folks in Madison Connecticut have registered www.theartguide.com in addition to the established URL www.theartguideonline.com for the gallery, artist and museums monthly publication.  All email addresses stay the same for now, so if you have those listed in your address book no need to worry. Take a visit to www.theartguide.com to check out the exhibitions listings and the monthly calendar for happenings in CT, MA, RI and NY art scene.  Autumn and leaf peeking season is an excellent time to do a New England road trip and see some great art as well.

How to Foster a Happy Relationship with Your Clients

Some time ago, I wrote a post here about how to Foster a Happy Relationship with Your Designer. I thought it might also be helpful to address this topic from the opposite stance in How to Foster a Happy Relationship with Your Clients. Clients, after all, are the ones who keep us in business.

I've been fortunate enough so that most of the clients I started with 7 years ago are still with me today. Creating a nice client base is essential to any business as it grows, so in keeping your clients happy all sorts of wonderful things will come your way. Here are some tips that have brought me some success:

1. Return phone calls and emails: This is important for not only the clients you have, but for inquires coming in to your business. Personally, not responding to a business inquiry is one of my pet peeves. When calling a business to inquire about services, if I don't receive a response after my second attempt, I'll go elsewhere assuming that business doesn't want the work.

Returning a phone call or email only takes a few minutes and makes the client feel they are important...because they are. I always attempt to return calls and emails within 24 hours. Yes there are those clients who will call you 6 times a day, but you need only to return one call back to them at the days end. Set aside a "call back" time during your day. Often the client just wants to touch base, hear your voice, or get a quick progress report. Guy Kawasaki wrote about Ten Things to Learn this School Year, where one item was the art of writing the five sentence email. Check out Guys post, for his other 9 things to learn this school year.

2. Make every client feel like they are your only client: Don't discuss other jobs or profiles. When working with your client try to make him or her feel like they are the only client on the planet. Listen and give your absolute attention. Follow up with a email or letter summarizing the discussion or meeting.

3. Be committed to your client.  Check for updates on their website or in the press. Congratulate them on the new show, work of art or recent marriage. Try and send referrals when possible.  Word of mouth is the best advertising and the good karma will come back to you ten fold.

4. Don't engage in office politics or gossip:  I hate it. I don't it. And you shouldn't either. Keep your slate clean and zip your lip. Don't bring your problems to the client. Be happy, upbeat and a pleasure to work with.

5. Own up to any mistakes you may make: Be honest, we all can make mistakes or slip ups.  The best policy is to own up to those little errors.

6. Be polite and considerate:  For the love of God, remember your manners. This is so simple and often so overlooked.

Redesign of Dragonfly Blu Design

I was inspired this weekend by a simple little photograph sent to me by Finnish Website Designer and Photographer, Jari Loisa. It resulted in my spending the entire weekend redesigning Dragonfly Blu. The redesign incorporates much more CSS than previous other sites I have created, and also sports a Flash driven projects portfolio. Site Transfers are Complete :: Dragonfly Blu Server Upgrade

Update for my clients:  Transfer of all client files are complete.  This means if you are a Dragonfly Blu Design client with web site hosting, your site files are now residing safely on the new server.  YAY..congrat's to us all.  The process went amazing well and quicker than I ever expected. All email accounts are intact as are subdomains and SQL databases.  I love when things WORK!

The last step to this process is changing the DNS (Domain Name Server) at the domain name register.  If you registered your domain name with Dragonfly Blu Domains, you need to do nothing as DFB will handle this for you.  If you registered your domain name elsewhere such as Network Solutions, Go Daddy, Register.com, you must either contact me or log in to your account and change your DNS to point to the new server. You should have received an email at your secondary email address with instructions on doing this. DNS must be changed in order for your site to go live on the internet and be accessible to your viewing audience and to reestablish email functions.

Dragonfly Blu Design Upgrades to New Website Hosting Servers

The last few days has found my site server being a general pain in the butt. The downtime has been far too long for my liking and I'll be honest...it has made me pretty angry. In response to this, I have begun the transfer of all Dragonfly Blu client site files to a new state of the art server. This new server will be a Dragonfly Blu Design name server and provide more disk space, higher bandwidth, faster FTP, as well as the following enhancements and features:

* Redundant Server Backup
* 99.9% Uptime
* Instant Blogs
* Instant Chat rooms
* Hotlink Protection
* Guest books
* Shopping carts
* Forums
* and more...


Of course, clients of DFB will still have access to Cpanel for complete control of their website, email and site statistics. Dragonfly will provide multi language features for the cpanel as well as upgrading spam filters, mailing lists, subdomains and enhanced scripting options.

The transfer of site files has already begun and will continue to take place during the week of August 14. Please bear with me as I make the necessary changes in moving files and redirecting domain name servers. I expect that all changes will be completed by Wednesday morning August 16, 2006.
